Drug Uses
Exelon is a cholinesterase inhibitor that increases the amount of a certain substance called acetylcholine in the brain. This helps in treating impairment of memory, judgment, and abstract thinking as well as personality changes caused due to Alzheimer’s disease.
How it is taken
Exelon can be taken by mouth with or without food. The pill is to be swallowed whole with a glass of water without crushing or chewing it.
Missed Dosage
If you miss a dose of Exelon, then you may take it as soon as you remember and adjust the remaining doses accordingly. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose then you may skip this dose and continue with the regular dosage. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose.
Overdose
Some of the symptoms of an Exelon overdose include dizziness, interrupted breathing, lightheadedness, muscle weakness or collapse, seizures, severe nausea, slow breathing, slow pulse, sweating, vomiting. Seek medical attention immediately if you suspect an overdose.
Warnings/Precautions
Discuss with your doctor about any prior medical condition that you may have including allergies to medicines, food or other substances, if you are allergic to any ingredient in Exelon, if you have heart problems (eg, slow or irregular heartbeat, sick sinus syndrome), breathing problems (eg, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD]), seizures, ulcer, kidney problems, or urinary blockage.
If you are pregnant or suspect that you are, then stop using Exelon and contact your doctor immediately.
It is unknown whether is Exelon secreted in breast milk. Avoid breast feeding while using the drug.
Certain drugs can interact with and hence, mention clearly to your doctor or pharmacist all medicines, dietary supplements and herbal prescriptions that you are taking.
Exelon should not be used in children as the safety and effectiveness of the drug have not been confirmed yet.
Ensure that you inform your doctor and your dentist about before receiving any form of medical treatment or dental treatment or emergency surgery.
Possible Side Effects
Some of the common side effects of are Appetite loss, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, general body discomfort, gas, headache, increased sweating, indigestion, nausea, stomach pain, tiredness, tremor, vomiting, weakness, weight loss. Please contact your doctor if the symptoms persist or become bothersome.
Other severe side effects include allergic reactions (rash, hives, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue), black or bloody stools, chest pain, coffee ground–like vomit, decreased urination, fainting, heart attack, heart failure, mental/mood changes, seizures, severe nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, severe stomach pain, slow or irregular heartbeat.
You must seek medical attention immediately if any of these side effects occur.
