Drug Uses
Inderal is a non-selective beta blocker that is used in the treatment of several conditions like prevention of angina pectoris (chest pain), preventing certain abnormal or rapid heart rhythms and treatment of high blood pressure. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
How it is taken
Inderal can be taken by mouth with or without food. However, it is important that you maintain consistency with the way you take it. (Either on en empty stomach or with food) The best way to use the drug is as recommended by your doctor.
Avoid taking antacids containing aluminum for at least 2 hours after using the drug.
Missed Dosage
If you miss a dose of Inderal then you may take it as soon as you remember and adjust the remaining doses accordingly. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose then you may skip this dose and continue with the regular dosage. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose.
Overdose
Some of the typical symptoms of Inderal include extremely slow heartbeat, irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, difficulty breathing, especially when lying down, lightheadedness, especially upon standing, severe congestive heart failure, seizures, swelling of ankles, unconsciousness, possibly leading to lack of heartbeat and wheezing. So seek medical attention immediately if you suspect an overdose.
Warnings/Precautions
Discuss with your doctor about any prior medical condition that you may have including allergies to medicines, food or other substances, if you have ever had an adrenal gland tumor, anaphylaxis, asthma, Raynaud phenomenon, chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, or other lung disease, congestive heart failure, narrowing of blood vessels of the legs, arms, stomach, or kidneys, an unusually slow heartbeat, diabetes, kidney problems, low blood sugar, or an overactive thyroid, if you have Wolff–Parkinson–White syndrome, or if you are having surgery.
You must not take if you are allergic to any ingredient in it or if you have had a heart attack and have very low blood pressure or uncontrolled heart failure or shock caused by heart failure or if you are taking mibefradil.
If you are pregnant or suspect that you are, then stop using Inderal and contact your doctor immediately.
Certain drugs can interact with Inderal and hence, mention clearly to your doctor or pharmacist all medicines, dietary supplements and herbal prescriptions that you are taking.
It is unknown whether Inderal is secreted in breast milk. Avoid breast feeding while using the drug.
If your doctor has prescribed a potassium supplement to you, then keep taking it according to the prescribed dosage.
Inderal may hide the symptoms of hyperthyroidism like fast heartbeat. Stop taking Inderal and contact your doctor immediately.
Inderal may affect your blood sugar level and hide the symptoms of low blood sugar. It may make you feel anxious, sweaty, weak, dizzy, drowsy, or faint. Contact your doctor immediately if these symptoms occur.
Inderal may cause certain lab tests (including the glaucoma screening test) to be incorrect. Ensure that your lab personnel know that you are taking the drug.
Ensure that you inform your doctor and your dentist about Inderal before receiving any form of medical treatment or dental treatment or emergency surgery.
It has been noted that children are more sensitive to the side effects of the drug. They might need a dosage adjustment or special monitoring throughout the treatment.
Possible Side Effects
Some of the common side effects of are Constipation, depression, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, hallucinations, lightheadedness, nausea, sleeplessness, stomach cramps, tiredness, vision problems, vivid dreams, vomiting, and weakness. Please contact your doctor if the symptoms persist or become bothersome.
Other severe side effects include allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, and tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue).
You must seek medical attention immediately if any of these side effects occur.
