Drug Uses
Levaquin is a synthetic chemotherapeutic agent that is used to cure severe bacterial infections (severe in nature like several types of sinus infection and pneumonia, flare-ups of chronic bronchitis, acute kidney infections, chronic prostate infections and infections of the skin). It may also be prescribed to prevent or slow anthrax after exposure.
How it is taken
Levaquin can be taken by mouth with or without food. It is recommended that you increase your fluid intake while taking the drug.
Use it for the full length of treatment and take it at the same time each day to get full benefits of treatment.
The best way to use the drug is as recommended by your doctor.
Missed Dosage
If you miss a dose of Levaquin then you may take it as soon as you remember and adjust the remaining doses accordingly. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose then you may skip this dose and continue with the regular dosage. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose.
Overdose
If you suspect an overdose, then seek medical attention immediately.
Warnings/Precautions
Discuss with your doctor about any prior medical condition that you may have including allergies to medicines, food or other substances, if you are allergic to any ingredient in Levaquin, if you or a family member have a history of fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat, chest pain, angina, or heart attack, if you have other heart problems (eg, heart failure, enlarged heart), diabetes, kidney problems, tendon problems (eg, inflammation), or Alzheimer disease, have narrowed or hardened blood vessels in the brain, increased pressure in the brain, nervous system problems, or a history of seizures (eg, epilepsy).
If you are pregnant or suspect that you are, then stop using Levaquin and contact your doctor immediately.
Certain drugs can interact with Levaquin and hence, mention clearly to your doctor or pharmacist all medicines, dietary supplements and herbal prescriptions that you are taking.
Levaquin is secreted in breast milk. Avoid breast feeding while using the drug.
Levaquin may affect your blood sugar level and may make you feel confused, drowsy, or thirsty. Contact your doctor immediately if these symptoms occur.
Levaquin may cause certain lab tests to be incorrect. Ensure that your lab personnel know that you are taking the drug.
Ensure that you inform your doctor and your dentist about Levaquin before receiving any form of medical treatment or dental treatment or emergency surgery.
Levaquin is an antibiotic and it cannot be used to cure a viral infection. Long term usage of the drug may lead to a second infection. Contact your doctor immediately if this happens.
In some cases Levaquin leads to stomach pain or cramps, severe diarrhea, or bloody stools occur. Contact your doctor immediately if this happens.
Levaquin may make you more sensitive to the sun so please avoid the sun, sunlamps or a tanning booth until you know how your body reacts to the drug. If you cannot avoid going out in the sun for a long while, then wear protective clothing or use a proper sunscreen.
Avoid taking vaccinations (typhoid) as the drug decreases the effectiveness of the vaccine.
Periodic lab tests may be recommended to monitor your health while taking the drug. Ensure that you do not miss any lab tests.
It has been noted that elder patients are more sensitive to the side effects of the drug. They might need a dosage adjustment or special monitoring throughout the treatment.
Possible Side Effects
Some of the common side effects of are Diarrhea, dizziness, gas, lightheadedness, nausea, stomach pain. Please contact your doctor if the symptoms persist or become bothersome.
Other severe side effects include allergic reactions, bloody stools, chest pain, confusion, dark urine, decreased or painful urination, fainting, fast or irregular heartbeat, fever, chills, or sore throat, hallucinations, hoarseness, joint or muscle pain or weakness, mental or mood changes, new or worsening nightmares, restlessness, red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin, seizures, severe sunburn, shortness of breath, stomach pain/cramps, suicidal thoughts or actions, symptoms of high or low blood sugar (eg, increased thirst, hunger, or urination, fast breathing, flushing, increased sweating, vision changes), symptoms of nerve problems (eg, unusual pain, burning, tingling, or numbness, changes in perception or heat or cold, decreased sensation of touch), tremors, unusual bruising or bleeding, vaginal discharge, irritation, or odor, wheezing, yellowing of the skin or eyes.
You must seek medical attention immediately if any of these side effects occur.
