Drug Uses
Ilosone is usually used for the treatment of infections that are caused by certain bacteria in people who are allergic to penicillin. However, it may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor. For example, bacterial endocarditis and attacks of rheumatic fever.
How it is taken
Ilosone can be taken by mouth with a meal. The pill is to be swallowed whole without crushing, breaking or chewing it. Maintain a fixed routine (same time every day) for taking the drug and continue to use it for the entire length of treatment.
It is recommended that you avoid grapefruit completely while using the drug.
The best way to use the drug is as recommended by your doctor.
Missed Dosage
If you miss a dose of Ilosone then you may take it as soon as you remember and adjust the remaining doses accordingly. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose then you may skip this dose and continue with the regular dosage. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose.
Storage
Store it at room temperature (between between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C) in an air tight container protecting it from direct exposure to light, heat and moisture. Keep away from pets and children.
Overdose
Seek medical attention immediately if you suspect an Ilosone overdose.
Warnings/Precautions
Discuss with your doctor about any prior medical condition that you may have including allergies to medicines, food or other substances, if you are allergic to any ingredient in Ilosone, if you have diarrhea or a stomach or intestinal infection, if you have a history of kidney or liver disease, heart problems, fast or irregular heartbeat, myasthenia gravis, or the blood disorder porphyria.
If you are pregnant or suspect that you are, then stop using Ilosone and contact your doctor immediately.
Certain drugs can interact with Ilosone and hence, mention clearly to your doctor or pharmacist all medicines, dietary supplements and herbal prescriptions that you are taking.
It is unknown whether Ilosone is secreted in breast milk. Avoid breast feeding while using the drug.
Ilosone is an antibacterial and cannot be used to cure viral infections.
Long time use of the drug may lead to a second infection. Contact your doctor immediately if this happens as your medicine might require modifications.
Ilosone may also lead to stomach pain or cramps, severe diarrhea, or bloody stools. Contact your doctor if this happens.
Periodic lab tests including including liver function, kidney function, and complete blood cell counts may be recommended to monitor your health while taking the drug. Ensure that you do not miss any lab tests.
Possible Side Effects
Some of the common side effects of are Diarrhea, loss of appetite, nausea, stomach pain, vomiting. Please contact your doctor if the symptoms persist or become bothersome.
Other severe side effects include allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue), bloody stools, hearing changes, irregular heartbeat, red, swollen, or blistered skin, severe diarrhea, severe stomach pain or cramps, yellowing of skin or eyes.
You must seek medical attention immediately if any of these side effects occur.
