Drug Uses
Biaxin is an antibiotic chemically related to erythromycin that is used to cure infections like Pneumonia, Sinusitis and acute middle ear infections caused by certain bacteria.
How it is taken
Biaxin may be taken with or without a meal. However, if you have been prescribed Biaxin XL, then always take it with a meal. Ensure that you do not crush or chew the pill.
Drug Class & Mechanism
Missed Dosage
If you miss a dose of Biaxin, then you may take it as soon as you remember and adjust the remaining doses accordingly. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose then you may skip this dose and continue with the regular dosage. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose.
Storage
Store it at room temperature (between between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C) in an air tight container protecting it from direct exposure to light, heat and moisture. If you are using the suspension, then prevent it from freezing. Keep away from pets and children.
Overdose
The typical symptoms of an overdose include diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Like most medicines, seek medical attention if you suspect an overdose.
Discuss with your doctor about any prior medical condition that you may have including allergies to medicines, food or other substances, have diarrhea, a stomach infection, a blood disorder, severe kidney problems, or liver problems.
Do not use Biaxim if you are allergic to any ingredient of Biaxin or any other macrolide, if you are taking cisapride, cyclosporine, dofetilide, eletriptan, ergot alkaloids, H1 antagonists, pimozide, QT–prolonging agents, quinolones, or sumatriptan.
If you are pregnant or suspect that you are, then stop using and contact your doctor immediately. Biaxin can harm the fetus.
Certain drugs can interact with Biaxin and hence, mention clearly to your doctor or pharmacist all medicines, dietary supplements and herbal prescriptions that you are taking.
Biaxin is an antibiotic and cannot be used to cure viral infections. Long term use of Biaxin can lead to a second infection. Inform your doctor if this occurs as your medication may need to be changed.
Some patients develop stomach pain or cramps, severe diarrhea, or bloody stools while using Biaxin. Contact your doctor promptly if this occurs.
It is unknown whether Biaxin is secreted in breast milk. Avoid breast feeding while using the drug.
Periodic lab tests including blood count may be recommended to monitor your health while taking the drug. Ensure that you do not miss any lab tests.
Do not use in children below 6 months of age as the safety and effectiveness of the drug in this age group is not verified.
Some of the common side effects of are Abnormal taste, diarrhea, headache, indigestion, nausea, stomach discomfort and vomiting.
Other severe side effects include allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue), bloody stools, confusion, decreased urination, depression, emotional or mood changes, hallucinations, nightmares, severe diarrhea, severe stomach pain/cramps, trouble sleeping.
You must seek medical attention immediately if any of these serious side effects occur.
