Lotrisone (Clotrimazole and Betamethasone)

Drug Uses

Lotrisone is an antifungal and corticosteroid combination (Clotrimazole and Betamethasone) used for treating certain fungal skin infections ringworm, athlete's foot, and jock itch.

How it is taken

Wash your hands before using the drug. Now clean and dry the affected area. Apply gently into the affected area and rub the medication in. Use it for the complete duration of treatment to clear up your infection completely.

If you are applying to the groin, then use it only for two weeks and wear loose fitting clothes.

Drug Class & Mechanism

Lotrisone is an antifungal and corticosteroid combination (Clotrimazole and Betamethasone) that weakens the cell wall of the fungi. It also has anti-inflammatory and anti-itching properties.

Missed Dosage

If you miss a dose of Lotrisone then you may take it as soon as you remember and adjust the remaining doses accordingly. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose then you may skip this dose and continue with the regular dosage. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose.

Storage

Store it at room temperature (between between 36 and 86 degrees F (20 and 30 degrees C) in an air tight container protecting it from direct exposure to light, heat and moisture. Keep away from pets and children.

Warnings/Precautions

Discuss with your doctor about any prior medical condition that you may have including allergies to medicines, food or other substances, diaper rash, eczema, measles, tuberculosis (TB) or a positive TB skin test, chickenpox, shingles, or thinning of the skin.

You must not take if you are allergic to any ingredient in it or are taking pimozide or an ergot alkaloid (eg, ergotamine).

If you are pregnant or suspect that you are, then stop using and contact your doctor immediately.

Certain drugs can interact with and hence, mention clearly to your doctor or pharmacist all medicines, dietary supplements and herbal prescriptions that you are taking especially anyone of the following.

Clarithromycin because it increases the chances of certain side effects

Barbiturates (eg, phenobarbital), carbamazepine, hydantoins (eg, phenytoin), or rifampin because it decreases the effectiveness of the drug.

Ergot alkaloids (eg, ergotamine), imatinib, live vaccines, macrolide immunosuppressants (eg, tacrolimus), pimozide, or ritodrine

Hydantoins (eg, phenytoin) or interleukin-2

It is unknown whether is secreted Lotrisone in breast milk. Avoid breast feeding while using the drug.

Possible Side Effects

Some of the common side effects of are dry skin, mild burning or stinging at the application site. Please contact your doctor if the symptoms persist or become bothersome.

Other severe side effects include severe allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue), irritation, redness, blistering, swelling, oozing, or severe burning at the application site, unusual bruising.

You must seek medical attention immediately if any of these side effects occur.
